Rest in peace, John Hampton and John Fry

Posted on 19. Dec, 2014 by in News

In the last week, my two greatest mentors passed.

Grammy-award winning engineer / producer John Hampton died on December 12, 2014. John, a four-decade long engineer at Memphis’ Ardent Studios, had an illustrious career working with top artists including the White Stripes, Replacements, Gin Blossoms, Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn, and Travis Tritt, among many more. John was the man that taught me ‘how to listen’, and was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known.

John Fry, founder and legendary producer of Ardent Studios, died on December 18, 2014. For fifty years, he was the rock of Memphis music – a visionary who built a world-renowned studio, he was a sonic innovator and a local industry linchpin. More than anything, though, John Fry was a mentor: to the legendary band Big Star, and to a generation of musicians and music professionals for whom he served as a guiding light, father figure and friend.

Both of these men had a profound effect on me, but far beyond that was the effect they had on not just Memphis music, but the industry as a whole. Their loss creates a massive deficit that will be felt for a long time.

Rest in peace, my friends.

Congratulations to Mike Farris!

Amy LaVere – Stereophile’s ‘Recording of the Month’

Posted on 21. Aug, 2014 by in News

Congratulations to Amy LaVere for her new album, ‘Runaway’s Diary‘, being selected as Stereophile Magazine‘s Recording of the Month! Produced by Luther Dickinson, mixed by Kevin Houston, and mastered by Brad at Euphonic. Vinyl sides were cut by Jeff Powell at Take Out Vinyl.

From the article:
Runaway’s Diary is the sound of stars aligning, both personally (judging by her lyrics) and musically, much of the latter due to a knockout production job by Luther Dickinson. The album sounds spacious, and while clearly focused on her voice, is immensely attractive for its full-bodied sound, its spare, tasteful arrangements, and the original drumming and percussion by LaVere’s longtime collaborator Shawn Zorn. Dickinson plays guitar on eight of the ten tracks. Even better, the LP on gold vinyl, is superquiet and, for an indie release, of refreshingly high quality in both mastering and pressing. And for old school believers in analog sound, it’s a nice touch that the album’s credits include the line: “Principal recordings made on magnetic tape.” ”

Congrats to all involved!
